King of Pop remembered in Stockholm

This was the scene at Sergels Torg, the central square in the Swedish capital shortly after people learned about the death of music legend Michael Jackson.   Fans lit candles, brought red roses, a sequinned glove, photos of the star as well as a copy of tabloid Expressen, whose first page declared “Dead Last Night.”   News travels fast.  Many people in Sweden learned about Michael’s passing  within seconds of people in Hollywood.  I was  drowning in text messages and phone calls all saying the same thing: ”Have you heard? On the way to an artist friend’s apartment to watch the second half of a soccer match on TV (Sweden-Malta 4-0!) we happened to hear tough music coming from a place on Tjärhovsgatan.  Kafé 44 is a club and bookstore with lots of attitude, where one can hear live bands play Tuesdays and Thursdays. No alcohol is served, which is fine with me.  The books have an anarchist, syndicalist or  Marxist slant.    “Eat the Rich” was the motto of one of the patches which caught my eye. Russia provoked by sketch

A debate blossomed this week about a comic sketch broadcast live by Sveriges Television (SVT), the public TV channel, during the national finals of the Eurovision song contest. The musical sketch performed at the Globen arena was called “Tingeling,” and it featured a series of stereotypes of Russia.
